The Opposite Sex

What's your line...

As for the man-woman situation during these recession/depression times, well what wise things can I say? Besides not being able to afford to divide up the piggy bank in case of a divorce, the single, straight man is in a funk. He is discovering that there are no more jobs on Wall Street and his stock portfolio has lost it's value. Therefore, no more bottles of Crystal to buy for those pretty Brazilian girls in the corner. Yesterday, as I walked down 9th Avenue through Hell's Kitchen I peered into the windows of every joint I passed. They were all full of people drinking. I even saw one couple making out. But, the majority of folks were just getting drunk with their friends and commiserating.

So what are single men and women doing right now? They are going to benefits. Yes, they are. At a recent benefit I attended there were plenty of singles. And after about seven to eight drinks some even met each other. At a table next to me I saw Marcus (the Swedish god) Schenkenberg and Danilo Gallinari of the Knicks checking out girls just like the rest of mere mortals do. And although they are both rich and good-looking, they went home alone. Now if this does not make you feel better about your love life, I don't know what will. The bottom line is more people will be looking at dating services, agencies and the web then ever before. But Spring is actually here after the long dark winter, and I still like to believe that sitting in a small cafe somewhere in our fair city we shall meet each other the old fashioned way by actually speaking to one another.

So here is a list of a few pick-up joints to suit almost anyone:

The Ear Bar in West Soho-- Great looking people with faces that seem to pop out of a photography book. And the drinks are priced fair.

Les Enfants Terrible-- 37 Canal Street, corner of Ludlow. Great late crowd with a very cool DJ and French men galore, look out for some funky locals, though. Yes there are pretty girls there as well.

Employees Only-- Hudson Street. West Village. Hot Spot after 1 am. People are very friendly and the food is excellent and priced right.

Apotheke Bar-- Chinatown. The place is beautiful. The drinks are exotic and the crowd is mostly under 30. The vibe is so cool that you are happy to make the trip there.

The Macao Trading Company-- 311 Church Street. Very Cool Spot. Easy Place to meet someone.
